“Rinah u’Tefillah, the order to be recited by the cantor and the congregation on the festival of the birthday of our lady Queen Wilhelmina, may her glory be exalted” – a booklet of prayer and thanksgiving issued by the Jewish community in Amsterdam on the occasion of the birth of Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands – 1901. (At that time, 11 years had passed since the beginning of her reign. In the early years, her mother, Emma, served as regent until Wilhelmina reached maturity in 1898).
Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands [1880–1962], was the most popular and beloved monarch of the Dutch royal dynasty. She reigned in the Netherlands for fifty-eight years, longer than any other Dutch monarch. Wilhelmina was an enthusiastic supporter of the Jewish community, and many Jews from across the Jewish world participated in her wedding (more than 300,000 people in total stood in the streets of The Hague to watch the procession). Throughout her reign, the queen supported the Jewish community – she appointed Jews to high-ranking positions in her government, frequently spoke out against antisemitism, and assisted Jews, including during the Nazi occupation in World War II.
