Portrait of U.S. President Herbert Hoover on a cloth map surrounded by decorations in the colors of the American flag from his 1928 presidential campaign. A different cloth map from Hoover’s presidential race events, which is more common, is known. The map before us is an exceptionally rare example.
Herbert Clark Hoover [1874-1964], the 31st President of the United States, served from 1929 to 1933. Following President Coolidge’s announcement that he would not seek another term in the 1928 presidential election, Hoover declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination. He quickly became the frontrunner. His main opponent was Frank Lowden, the former governor of Illinois, but Hoover, who was widely popular, easily defeated him. The press supported Hoover, and his experience, popularity, and reputation enabled him to secure the nomination in the first round of voting.
