A rare red Star of David garment pin on a silver background and initials: “A.B” – Agudat Briut (Health Association).
The Health Association operated in the Hebrew schools in Eretz Israel during the British Mandate. The role of the students who were members of the association was to take care of the cleanliness and hygiene of the students in the school. The students would help the nurse check the cleanliness of the nails and hair, check that the shoes are polished, and more. They also took care of the cleanliness of the school yard. The students proudly walked around with the “A.B.” pin, which testified that they belonged to the association. The health association even had an anthem: “Help the grandfather, care for the child don’t be late… in a healthy body resides a healthy mind…”, and on every occasion they sang the “cleanliness song” composed by Yitzhak Ogen: ‘We all have a good friend, cleanliness, and that is his name…”. One of the association’s slogans, which was also printed on posters, was: “Morning, evening twice, every day and day regularly, brush your teeth – that’s how you’ll keep your health”. The students wore the pin on their shirt collars.
