Package card belonging of the Jewish prisoner Jean Kardaczewski from Alsace, who served in the Polish regiment (“R. Polonais”) from camp “V.A, ” prisoner number 5476. The card was issued under the name Maurice Venel, who was a representative or coordinator for sending packages through the aid committee. Signed and stamped by the mayor of Paris. The prisoner was a Polish soldier captured by Germany during World War II and held in a German POW camp. Such cards were used to coordinate and dispatch packages for the prisoner. On the back of the card, a numbered table was used to track package shipments or aid distribution.
During World War II, hundreds of thousands of prisoners were held in various camps across Europe, including military prisoners of war and civilians. The delivery of packages often served as the only connection between prisoners and their families. Humanitarian organizations, such as the Red Cross, supervised package deliveries to ensure they reached their intended recipients.
