Real Photo postcard showing Adolf Hitler feeding calves on a field. Photograph and publication by Hitler’s personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann. Munich, 1930s.
The well-known story is told about Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, the Rosh Yeshiva of Slobodka, who visited Germany before the outbreak of World War II. He saw a woman kissing her dog on one of the streets and said “In a place where they kiss dogs, they will yet murder people”, and he called out about the Nazis the verse: “זובחי אדם עגלים ישקון” – “Those who sacrifice humans kiss calves” – those who kiss calves are those who will sacrifice human beings. The photograph before us showing Adolf Hitler feeding calves is captioned at the bottom left: “The Leader as an Animal Lover” .
