Schapiro’s Kosher Wines – Advertisement Poster for “Shapiro’s Kosher Wine” – “Wine You Can Almost Cut with a Knife.” A beautifully designed cardboard poster in yellow and purple tones. New York, c. 1950s.

The Schapiro Wine Company was one of the first significant kosher wineries in the United States, producing and selling kosher wines for nearly a century. Founded by Sam Schapiro at 126 Rivington Street, the company operated continuously from 1907 to 2000, often outpacing its competitors, such as Birnbaum and Kedem, who also sold kosher wines. The slogan “Wine you can almost cut with a knife” refers to the wine’s particularly thick, sweet consistency, as it was made from Concord grapes and sugar water. Over time, however, the company struggled to compete with more modern producers, as the industry shifted towards less sweet and more sophisticated wines.

Size: 54×28 cm. Slight tear on the right. Condition: Good to very good.
