Press photograph of Albert Einstein speaking with Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Princeton, New Jersey, November 1949. AP agency photograph.

In the foreground of the photograph appears the caption:
(New York 10) Princeton, New Jersey, November 5 – Relatively informal – Professor Albert Einstein (left) and his guest, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, chat informally on the porch of Einstein’s home today, during a brief visit by the Prime Minister to Princeton University. Prof. Einstein, wearing a blue sweater and smoking a pipe, joked and laughed with his guest while neighbors watched from nearby yards.
On the verso, on an AP press slip:“Nehru Meets Einstein – Jawaharlal Nehru (right), Prime Minister of India, was a guest in Princeton, N.J., of Prof. Albert Einstein, the famous scientist, during a four-week tour of the United States, which concluded with a lecture in Madison, Wisconsin. – AP Photo.”

The meeting between the two took place on November 5, 1949, during Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit to the United States. The visit lasted about four weeks and included meetings with U.S. President Harry Truman, senior American officials, academics and scientists, and community leaders. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the friendship between the newly independent India – freed from British rule and granted independence in 1947 – and the United States, as well as to secure economic, scientific, and diplomatic support.

Size: 25×18 cm. Minor cracks. Good condition.
