On the Special and General Theory of Relativity (Popular Lecture) by Albert Einstein, “Translated with permission of the author” Yaakov Greenberg in Vienna, published by “Dvir” Tel Aviv 1928 – First Hebrew edition.

For the Hebrew edition of the theory of relativity, Einstein added a special preface: “The appearance of this book in the language of our ancestors fills my heart with special joy. It is a sign of the transformation that this language has undergone. It no longer limits its use within this boundary alone, to express the affairs of our people to the children of our people, but stands ready to absorb into itself everything that people find interest in. It serves as an important factor in our aspiration for a self-sustaining culture”.

The Hebrew edition was published based on the German original which came out in its fourteenth edition after the book had already been translated into most languages of the world, and for some reason its translation into Hebrew was late to appear. The translator strived to be faithful to the German original and as he writes: “My approach was to convey not only the progression of the relativity theory creator’s thoughts, but also the style of his lecture and the character of his language”.

The portrait of Einstein that appears next to the title page was made by Hermann Struck.

103 [2] p. Most pages of the book were not cut in print (joined at top). Tear in corner of two pages without damage to text, stains on cover. Good condition.
