A Postcard for Ordering the Foundational Racial Science Book “The Racial Science of the German People” by Hans Günther, Featuring an Image of a “Typical Jewish Child”. Germany, 1929.
The front of the postcard states in German that older editions of The Racial Science of the German People can be exchanged for the 13th edition, listing addresses where the exchange could be made. To the right, a photograph of an Eastern European Jewish child is affixed, with the caption: “Typischer Judentnabe” – “Typical Jewish Child”, intended to illustrate what Günther classified as a member of an “inferior race.” The back of the postcard lists Günther’s books, including “The Racial Study of the Jewish People”, “Racial Knowledge of the German People”, “Racial Science”, and others, along with blank lines for the purchaser’s information.
Hans Friedrich Karl Günther (1891–1968) one of the key architects of Nazi racial ideology and a leading propagator of German racial science. He embedded the concept of “subhuman” (Untermensch) into German society, particularly regarding the Jewish people. Günther wrote his widely influential book, The Racial Study of the German People, between 1920 and 1922—a work filled with pseudoscientific anti-Semitism, aimed at translating Aryan racial supremacy from theory into practice. The official owner of the publication was Adolf Hitler himself, and the first three editions were dedicated to him. The 1928 edition was distributed as a “Christmas greeting”, and in the 14th edition of 1930, Hitler was described as “the pioneer of racial thought.”
