A Double-Sided Antisemitic Advertisement for the Book Arbeiter, auf ein Wort! (“Workers, in One Word!”) and the Antisemitic Book “Judaism, Socialism, and Democracy” by Paul Karl Baumgarten. Leipzig, 1921.

On the left, an illustration of an Eastern European Jew’s face appears alongside the word “JUDA” (Jew), with the text: “Reflections on the Nature and Influence of Judaism, Paul Karl Baumgarten.” At the top of the page, it states: “Pass this leaflet from hand to hand and through letters! These pages are available for free mass distribution.” On the left, a promotional statement praising the book reads: “Compelling, this is the most important and greatest book on the Jewish question… Don Karl Baumgarten emphasizes Marxism as a global deception, with illustrations, worthy of mass distribution.” The book’s price in Austria is also listed. On the back, an advertisement for “Judaism, Socialism, and Democracy” by Paul Karl Baumgarten appears. To the left, an antisemitic illustration depicts a stereotypical Jewish figure scheming over German workers.

The book “Arbeiter, auf ein Wort!” by Paul Karl Baumgarten discusses the working class and labor conditions, incorporating antisemitic narratives within its arguments. Baumgarten adopts widely circulated antisemitic tropes of the time, portraying Jews as exploitative capitalists responsible for the economic and social injustices suffered by the working class. The Jewish people are depicted as manipulators of the economic system, reinforcing stereotypes of the Jew as a “schemer, ” “exploiter, ” or “immoral capitalist.” Baumgarten argues that Jews control the financial system and are responsible for the oppression of workers. The book incites hostility against Jews, attempting to foment resentment among its readers. This type of literature, which became widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often scapegoated Jews for societal and economic problems.
