Anti-Semitic door knocker in the form of Fagin - brass. Europe, 19th century. Rare.

The image of Fagin presented as a Jewish criminal and leader of a gang of pickpocketing children is taken from the novel ‘Oliver Twist’ by Charles Dickens [published in 1838]. The stereotypical figure appears in the book as a Jew in shabby clothes and messy hair. In the novel, Fagin is described in the most vulgar way as an evil and scheming villain who teaches children how to steal, and is referred to many times not by his first name, but as “the Jew”. The figure was received throughout Europe in various forms as a typical derogatory figure of the cunning and thieving Jew who threatens the local population.

Length: 8 cm. Age stains. Good condition.
