Les responsables – “The Responsible Ones” – Published by C.P.R.N. – An Antisemitic Publication Released in France Shortly After Germany’s Invasion of France, Accusing Jews of Being Responsible for France’s Weakening and Its Inability to Defend Itself Against Nazi Germany’s Invasion – “The responsible ones are the leaders of the Freemasons and the Jewish political clique, manipulated by London and Moscow, who ruled so foolishly, so criminally. They alone must pay…” France, 1940.

An antisemitic pamphlet filled with hateful rhetoric and accusations about the disaster allegedly brought upon France by the Jews in the period leading up to Nazi Germany’s sudden invasion of France. The anonymous author names Jewish public figures, whom he calls “the dictators of France”, “empty-headed, ” among other derogatory terms, claiming that each contributed to France’s blindness and weakening—politically by isolating it from neighboring European countries, and economically by supposedly taking over the French economy from within. This, he argues, indirectly and deliberately weakened the French Air Force—French tanks were outnumbered four to one by German tanks—and led to a significant shortage of weapons across the country. According to the author, this explains why France was unable to defend itself when the Germans invaded.

Among, the author targets the French Jewish politician Léon Blum, calling him
“the demon of our fate: this smooth-talking Jewish polygraph, full of Marxist paradoxes but above all full of that dissolving spirit typical of his race in perpetual rebellion, was the demon of our fate… The presence of Léon Blum at the head of France, a Jew and a Socialist, because he was a friend of the Reds of Spain and the Bolsheviks of Russia, filled our neighbors with concern and anger. Even Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland distanced themselves from us, not to mention Catholic countries like Portugal and the South American republics… Blum, when he left office, left us a tragic legacy. Class struggle intensified, general laziness, disorganized production, and in addition, the distrust of neighboring powers—in short, everything necessary to lead a country to conflict and defeat…” He also accuses the Jewish journalist and editor of “Le Populaire, ” Rosenfeld, of sabotaging France’s foreign efforts, and other Jewish figures of blinding the French political system to the approaching Nazi threat. The pamphlet is written in a sarcastic tone, supposedly analyzing historical events objectively, with the antisemitic stance presented as the logical conclusion drawn from the “facts.” The pamphlet concludes with the hateful statement:
“The responsible ones are the leaders of the Freemasons and the Jewish political clique, manipulated by London and Moscow, who ruled so foolishly, so criminally. They alone must pay…”

With Germany’s invasion of France, antisemitic violence increased, directly fueled by publications like this one.
