BOLSHEVISM IS NOT JEWISH, by Rabbi Joseph Zvi Hertz, published by Woburn Press, London [1939]. Rare.
Words published by Chief Rabbi of Britain Rabbi Joseph Hertz rebutting the accusation that Judaism is Bolshevik due to the fact that some leaders of the Bolshevik revolution were Jewish. The words were published in response to an antisemitic booklet published in London at that time titled “Bolshevism Is Jewish” (see below). In his words he explains that the spiritual fathers of Bolshevism are not Jewish, though it is true that Marx was Jewish he was baptized at age six and hated all things Jewish. Rabbi Hertz explains that the origins of Bolshevism were in Russia, and in fact the Jews in Russia and Ukraine opposed Bolshevism, and moreover the Bolshevik leaders themselves fought against anything Jewish. Rabbi Hertz summarizes his words: “To summarize, reviewing the membership of the current Soviet government body, we discover Stalin stands at its head, not a Jew. There are no Jews in the secretariat, one Jew in the political bureau against six non-Jews, six Jews in the People’s Council against twelve non-Jews, and in the department dealing with separate Soviet republics two Jews against seventeen non-Jews, in other words 43 of the leading Bolshevik government body are non-Jews against eleven Jews. To claim that the majority of leading Communists are Jews or that Bolshevism is favored by Judaism is therefore a conspicuous misrepresentation of the actual facts”.
Rabbi Hertz published these words in response to a publication released in London at that time titled: “Bolshevism Is Jewish” by Leese, A. S. – published in London by the British Fascist League in 1939. In the booklet he published, Leese argues: “Bolshevism represents one of the later stages in the Jewish scheme for world domination” and that: “Bolshevism is Jewish. Its aim is to secure world power for Jews through the combined forces and allies of Jewish finance and Jewish Marxism”. In response to that booklet Rabbi Hertz published the booklet before us in precisely the same format – a soft cover with large black headline: “BOLSHEVISM IS NOT JEWISH”. (On Leese’s booklet cover appears the title: “Bolshevism Is Jewish” with an illustration of a swastika on the right side).
