This chilling account by André Respaut, a former Buchenwald inmate, documents the daily atrocities committed in the camp. Arrested by the Gestapo on charges of espionage, collaborating with resistance groups, and publishing anti-Nazi journalism, Respaut endured brutal torture during interrogations before being sent to the Compiègne internment camp. A few months later, he was deported to Buchenwald, where he repeatedly escaped near-certain death, ultimately surviving by sheer willpower. In this detailed memoir, Respaut describes the Nazis’ particularly cruel treatment of Jewish prisoners and the fate of those too weak to endure. He recounts the horrific murders of his fellow inmates, including distressing accounts of children and even infants who arrived with their parents and were brutally exterminated by the Nazis.
