BUCHENWALD TERRE MAUDITE – “Buchenwald – Cursed Earth” by André Respaut. Published by Imprimerie Réunies Brieu-Canal, Narbonne (France), 1946. First Edition. French. A harrowing publication detailing the horrors of Buchenwald by camp survivor André Respaut. The cover design, depicting a camp prisoner against a backdrop of blood, was created by Ray Monlaur. Due to the post-war paper shortage, the book was printed on simple brown paper.

This chilling account by André Respaut, a former Buchenwald inmate, documents the daily atrocities committed in the camp. Arrested by the Gestapo on charges of espionage, collaborating with resistance groups, and publishing anti-Nazi journalism, Respaut endured brutal torture during interrogations before being sent to the Compiègne internment camp. A few months later, he was deported to Buchenwald, where he repeatedly escaped near-certain death, ultimately surviving by sheer willpower. In this detailed memoir, Respaut describes the Nazis’ particularly cruel treatment of Jewish prisoners and the fate of those too weak to endure. He recounts the horrific murders of his fellow inmates, including distressing accounts of children and even infants who arrived with their parents and were brutally exterminated by the Nazis. Throughout the book, he reveals shocking events, such as starving prisoners poisoning their fellow inmates to obtain their meager bread rations or clothing before burial, the unimaginable horrors conducted on prisoners in Block 46, the merciless cruelty of block commanders, and many more gruesome details.
