“By Bicycles to the Land of Israel and Back” – A real photo postcard depicting the four Jewish cyclists of the “Maccabi Piotrków” team who completed a bicycle journey from Piotrków (Poland) to the Land of Israel and back. The reverse side notes the event in four languages: Hebrew, Polish, Romanian, and English. All four cyclists have signed the card, along with the date: July 2, 1932. Rare.
The four cyclists — J. Szware, A. Mordkiewicz, R. Brandwajn, and Ch. I. Zajaczkowski, members of the Maccabi Piotrków sports club — embarked on their journey in May 1932 from Poland to the Land of Israel and back, as an expression of solidarity with the First Maccabiah Games, held in the spring of 1932. The Polish riders sought to participate in the event and to strengthen the bond between Polish Jewry and the Land of Israel. The route of their journey took them across Europe, through the Balkans, Turkey, and Syria, before reaching the Land of Israel. Their return to Poland likely followed a similar path. The journey was completed in July of that same year.
