Wisconsin was a religiously diverse state, with a high proportion of Catholics alongside Protestants, making it a testing ground for Kennedy, who faced concerns about his Catholic faith. His main opponent in the primaries was Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, a beloved figure in the Midwest with a strong support base in the state. Ultimately, Kennedy won Wisconsin with 56% of the votes, compared to 44% for Hubert Humphrey. After the primaries, Kennedy entered the Democratic National Convention as the frontrunner. He secured the party’s nomination by gaining broad support from delegates nationwide, including from Southern states that were initially skeptical of his candidacy.
