On the title page, a handwritten dedication and signature by Max Brod, reading: “To Stephan Schwarz, the proven representative of Judaism, in a spirit of friendship, Max Brod 1956.” Inside the front cover, newspaper clippings related to Brod and envelopes from letters Brod sent to Stephan Schwarz were found.
The book’s title refers to Marcus Tullius Cicero, the famous Roman statesman, orator, and philosopher.
Max Brod (1884–1968): A writer, publicist, and composer, born in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic, then part of Austria-Hungary). He held a doctorate in law from Charles University in Prague and wrote in German. A close friend of Franz Kafka, Brod was responsible for publishing Kafka’s works posthumously, securing his literary legacy. In the last three decades of his life, he lived in Israel.
