Six leaves – Official letterhead papers of the “Jewish Maccabi Association Central Committee” – the sports association, from the early days when Maccabi began in Egypt. The pages discuss the initial design of the Maccabi symbols, a list of names of Maccabi Central Committee members, and more. Cairo and Alexandria, 1918-1920.
One of the important documents here is an official Maccabi letterhead from Alexandria from January 28, 1918, in which the group’s delegation sends a letter to an artist who designed the organization’s emblem in Egypt – a Star of David with the letter “Mem” in the center, confirming that the colors of the Star of David will be white and sky blue. Another document from Cairo details the list of Central Committee members in Cairo, and more.
It is commonly accepted that the Maccabi organization in Cairo began in 1932. Before us is a historical discovery proving that Maccabi members were already present in Egypt and began building an organizational infrastructure over ten years earlier, in 1918-1920.
