The movement was founded in 1912 under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Marcus, and dedicated itself to the sons and daughters of families who were interested in a general youth movement, but were rejected by the German national youth movements who refused to accept Jews into their ranks. In nature and a return to a life of pre-industrial simplicity in the spirit of the German national youth movement, “Wanderfogel” (migratory birds), with a general Jewish heritage and culture. After the end of World War I the movement numbered about 3,000 members.
