DAS HEILIGE LAND IN WORT U BILD – The Holy Land in words and pictures, by Paul Fleischmann – lithographs and photographs. Includes large lithographs across two pages. Published by Verlag Carl Hirsch, Konstanz [c. 1900] – copy in excellent condition. German.
The description of the author’s journey to the Holy Land, accompanied by dozens of photographs of the country’s landscapes and its people, as well as large lithographs printed on glossy paper. The author raised the land following the Bible – in Jerusalem, Tiberias, Jaffa, Hebron, Bethlehem, and other cities. And every time he found remains or came across a Jewish settlement, he expressed his admiration for the way the Jewish people preserved their character. For example, he writes: “We are constantly encountering biblical traces, and this is the most wonderful thing of all, that despite the tremendous upheavals that befell these cities, despite the fact that countless civilizations passed over them, the life of the ancient people stood up to them here with an almost incomprehensible stubbornness…”. He describes his visit to Jerusalem in great detail, and there is almost no site he did not visit. The author used David Roberts lithographs for the most part, and they were printed on glossy paper.
