David Roberts – Hebron – lithograph. London, 1839.

David Roberts [1796-1864] who began his career as a scenic artist and had no formal art training, became famous following an 11 month journey to the Middle East in 1838-9 where he painted almost everything he encountered, returning to London with 272 sketches. He converted the sketches into lithographs that were distributed to the general public, most of whom saw authentic views of Eretz Israel and surroundings for the first time. Roberts’ works are considered pioneering and among the most important made in the 19th century, providing Europeans, who until then were only familiar with the country’s landscapes from Scripture, with a firsthand lively depiction of the Holy Land.

Size: 22×29 cm. Impressive wood and glass frame: 33×40 cm. Very good condition.
