Stammeskunde Der Juden; Die Judischen Stamme Der Erde in Alter Und Neuer Zeit, Hisorisch-Anthropologische Skizzen – Tribal Studies of the Jews; The Jewish Tribes of the Earth in Ancient and Modern Times – A Comprehensive Study on Eastern Jews by Dr. Sigmund Feist (1865-1943) – Accompanied by Rare Photographs of Yemenite and North African Jewry. German.
This publication is an important exploration of the ancient origins of the Jews of Yemen and North Africa by the Jewish-German researcher Dr. Sigmund Feist. The book traces the language, clothing, customs, places of residence, unique architecture, migration patterns, roots, and Zionist activities in Eastern countries among Jewish communities in North Africa.
A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the Jews of Yemen and their historical establishment in the Arabian Peninsula. Dr. Feist argues that Yemenite Jews are the true and direct descendants of the ancient Hebrew ancestors. Based on observations made in the residential areas of Yemenite Jews around the year 1900, he characterizes this community in great detail: the Yemenite body structure, their special clothing, unique customs such as changing their clothing from black to white on Shabbat, changing their long robes when leaving the Jewish Quarter, and even combing their hair in different styles throughout the day. Additionally, he details their eating utensils, special pots, cooking methods, wooden cooking utensils, coffee brewing techniques, bathing practices, and more.
Dr. Feist also reviews the Jewish craftsmen in Yemen, their professions, expertise in various fields, and how they earned their livelihood. He writes that the talents of the Yemeni Jew earn them a place of honor even in the eyes of the non-Jewish population, and that the remarkable ability to preserve Yemeni traditions is connected to the strong, united nucleus of the Yemeni family, unparalleled by any other community.
The second part of the book features 38 plates with dozens of photographs of North African Jews, including many rare photographs of Jews from Sana’a and Yemen in their traditional clothing.
