Early Giant Poster of The Beatles’ Four Members in Their Youth, 1963, at the Dawn of Their Career with Their First Worldwide Breakthrough Following the Release of the Album “She Loves You”.
The members of the band—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr – were photographed by Dezo Hoffmann with the full approval of NEMS. The poster was distributed to readers of the women’s magazine “Reveille” in the October 1963 issue, right at the beginning of the band’s career. The Beatles’ first single, featuring “Love Me Do” and “P.S. I Love You, ” was released a year earlier in October 1962 and gained significant success in the Liverpool area. By the late summer of 1963, the band had made its first major breakthrough when they released the single She Loves You, which achieved enormous success and broke all sales records in the UK. On October 13, 1963, The Beatles appeared on the popular television show Sunday Night at the London Palladium, which was watched by 15 million viewers. These two performances, widely covered in the media, marked the first time the massive public hysteria, later known as Beatlemania, began to emerge in Britain.
The Beatles are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 800 million albums worldwide. They are the best-selling musicians in the United States, with 178 million sales. The Beatles have more number-one albums on the British Albums Chart and more singles sales in the UK than any other musical group.
