Entry Permit for Participation in Meetings of the Provisional Government of Israel for the Zionist Activist and Writer Avraham Levinson – June 15, 1948. Rare.

The document features Levinson’s passport photograph and is stamped by Security Officer Yedidya Emanuel, the authorized official responsible for granting access to special government meetings. Its validity extended from June 15, 1948, to August 31, 1948, and was later extended until March 30, 1949, by which time the first Israeli government had already been established.

Avraham Levinson (1891-1955) was a Hebrew and Yiddish writer, lawyer, and Zionist activist, as well as a translator and editor of Jewish-Polish heritage. From his youth, he was active in the Zionist movement, including Tze’irei Zion and various Zionist parties. After World War I, he settled in Warsaw and was elected as a delegate to the Polish Sejm in 1922. In 1929, he was appointed Deputy Mayor of Brest-Litovsk (Brisk de-Lita), a city with a Jewish majority population. In 1933, he became the director of Keren Hayesod in Poland. He immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1936, settling in Jerusalem, where he served as Director of the Organization and Publicity Department of the Hebrew University. From 1939, he headed the Center for Education and Culture of the Histadrut.

The Provisional Government of Israel functioned from the establishment of the state on May 14, 1948 (5 Iyar 5708), until March 10, 1949 (9 Adar 5709), when the first Israeli government was formed following the elections to the First Knesset. Its members were originally part of Minhelet Ha’am (the People’s Administration), a governing body established by the decision of the Zionist Executive on April 12, 1948, chaired by David Ben-Gurion.
