LA FAMINE GUETTE LES ANGLAIS – “Famine Threatens the British” by Vicomte Lymington – A Pro-Nazi Publication Distorting the Statements of British Statesman Viscount Lymington in Favor of Nazi Germany. Published by Orbis, Prague 1940 – First Edition. French.
A pro-Nazi publication that manipulates the self-criticism expressed by British statesman Viscount Lymington regarding Britain’s policies toward the world powers on the eve of World War II. Alan Sinclair selectively quotes passages from Lymington’s speeches and writings, presenting his views as legitimate criticism that supposedly validates Nazi Germany’s position.
For instance, Sinclair cites Lymington as allegedly expressing the belief that Nazi Germany would prove its superiority on the battlefield in the upcoming war due to its solid economic strength, in contrast to Britain’s weaknesses in foreign policy and economic infrastructure. The text further claims that “the average Englishman” does not see Germany as an enemy and even wishes for its prosperity. Additionally, Sinclair attributes to Lymington fears regarding power supply shortages, the collapse of British agriculture with years-long recovery challenges, deteriorating diplomatic relations between Britain and European nations, and more.
One of the central themes focuses on quotes where Lymington purportedly argues that the most immediate danger to Britain in wartime is famine. He contends that Britain’s economy, which at the time was highly dependent on imports from neighboring countries, would be particularly vulnerable in times of war when external supply chains would be severed. The publication includes photographs depicting British protesters holding signs such as “The best meal we’ve had in a year” to illustrate public fear of starvation, uncultivated fields labeled as “Wasteland in England”, and more.
All these elements are presented to stir internal opposition among British citizens against Britain’s involvement in the war against Nazi Germany, aiming to instill fear that Germany had a clear advantage over Britain.
