Five photographs of Eastern European Jews on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. 1930s.
One of the photographs is described on its back: “Polen Juden” – Polish Jews. On the back of another photograph is the stamp of a photographer from the town of Koblenz (Germany – a Jewish community existed in Koblenz since the Middle Ages. During Kristallnacht the interior of the town’s synagogue was destroyed, but the building was not set on fire. With the outbreak of the war many Jews fled the town and those who remained suffered severe oppression and were forced to stop working at their trade. 870 Jews from the area were deported in 1942 to concentration camps in the East via the Koblenz-Lutzel train station. The former synagogue building was largely destroyed by bombs in 1944).
