KZ RAVENSBRUCK ACHT FOTOS – “Camp Ravensbrück Eight Photographs” – folder with 8 photographs from the concentration and extermination camp Ravensbrück – the largest women’s camp in Germany. Publication of the Board of Curators for the establishment of national memorial sites in Buchenwald, Sachsenhausen, and Ravensbrück. mid 1940s.
The photographs are described on the back: the crematorium, the execution wall, [female prisoners in a train car] on the way from Ravensbrück to Auschwitz, the cells, women in forced labor of building roads, female prisoners in forced labor, the order area, an aerial view of the camp.
Inside the folder there is a detailed review about the women’s camps in general and about the Ravensbrück camp in particular. Among other things, it is written that at the end of the fall of 1938, 500 prisoners were transferred from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp to Mecklenburg in order to begin the construction of Ravensbrück, Europe’s largest women’s concentration camp:
“Tormented and beaten by the SS, without protection from heat and sun, the winter cold and hunger, the women of the camp had to face… Between 1939 and 1945, more than 130,000 women and children from 21 countries passed through Ravensbrück. The oldest women were in their 80s, and the youngest those born in the camp. 92,000 women perished in Ravensbrück… On April 30, 1945, the Soviet Army liberated the patients women who were still in the camp and saved them at the last moment before they were destined for extermination by the SS.”
