Footprints of the Trojan Horse Some methods used by Foreign Agents within the United States – A booklet with Anti-Nazi Illustrations by Jack Betts, Warning of the Nazi Takeover of the United States Through Dangerous Propaganda Methods Targeting the German Minority in America. Published by Citizenship Educational Service, Inc., New York, 1940 – First and Rare Edition
An early booklet, published in the first months of World War II, warning American citizens of the Nazi plan to infiltrate and take control of the United States from within and exposing the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. Each two-page spread features a powerful anti-Nazi illustration on the left and an explanatory text on the right. Lacking the military capability to launch a direct attack on the United States, Nazi Germany is portrayed as employing a “Trojan Horse” strategy—using German-American citizens as agents of propaganda to subvert the nation from within. The pamphlet defines this as “a new weapon for world conquest”, stating: “Even if enemy planes, ships, and soldiers cannot easily attack our shores, we are still in danger.” The writer refers to Hitler’s strategy as “Divide and Conquer from Within”, illustrating how the Nazis manipulate ethnic minorities to further their influence, an age-old tactic used by tyrants throughout history. In Germany, Hitler does this through attacks on the Jewish minority, while abroad, he seeks to manipulate minority groups to advance his ideology—either as pawns or as victims. The pamphlet highlights three primary Nazi threats within America: Inciting rebellion against the U.S. government among the 20 million Americans of German descent, whom Hitler claims as his own. Establishing future air bases in South America and gaining control over its trade after the war as a stepping stone toward the conquest of the world’s remaining democracies. Spreading Nazi propaganda in America through seemingly harmless individuals—agents who work directly with citizens, spreading Nazi ideology word-of-mouth. With compelling illustrations and sharp commentary, the pamphlet also depicts Germany’s totalitarian dictatorship, seeking to warn the American public of the fate that awaits if the Nazi plan succeeds. The writer concludes with a rallying cry: “Each of us is called upon to join this volunteer army to defend America from within. The first line of defense of our country is in our thoughts and personal actions. When we stand together in mutual respect for each other’s rights as a united people, dedicated to liberty, we will build a nation so strong that no power on earth can destroy us. We must be steadfast in our resolve against all the madness of tyranny in our present world. This is America’s mission.”
