Commentaire géographique sur l’Exode et les Nombres – Geographical Commentary on the Book of Exodus and the Book of Numbers, by Léon de Laborde, published by Jules Renouard et Compagnie. Paris and Leipzig, 1841 – First edition. Engraved maps and diagrams.
An important study attempting to geographically locate the events described in the Books of Exodus and Numbers – the journey from Egypt through Sinai to the border of the Land of Canaan. Laborde incorporated in his writings the findings from his field travels, comparisons to classical writings, and maps or sketches of sites. His aim was to link the descriptions in the Torah with actual geographical locations, using archaeological and geographical knowledge.
Léon de Laborde (1807–1869) a French diplomat, archaeologist, art historian, and geographer. He devoted much of his work to biblical geography and the study of the Middle East, publishing several scholarly-historical books with sketches and maps. He also served as curator at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and was active in the study of historical sites in Egypt, Syria, the Land of Israel, and Anatolia.
