GUIDE de l’ancien camp de concentration de MAUTHAUSEN – “Guide to the Old Mauthausen Concentration Camp”, published by Édité par l’AMICALE DE MAUTHAUSEN – the Association of Former Mauthausen Prisoners. Texts edited by Émile Vallet. [Early 1960s]. In French.
A detailed guide accompanied by photographs, documenting the operation of the Mauthausen death camp – from the arrival of prisoners, the change into prison uniforms, and the origins of inmates who came from over 60 nationalities. It describes the various camp facilities where prisoners were subjected to forced labor, the functioning of the subcamps, the harsh conditions endured by the inmates, the executions, and the conditions inside the bunker (the prison surrounded by walls where medical experiments were conducted on prisoners’ bodies). The guide also details the operation of the crematoria, the horrors of the gas chambers and surgical rooms, and provides an account of the different blocks within the camp (by block number), the horrific fate of the Jews imprisoned there, and the atrocities that took place on the Stairs of Death, and more. The booklet includes harsh photographs of emaciated prisoners as they were found at the time of liberation, as well as images of various sections of the camp.
28 pages + [2] folded maps of the camp. Minor loss of a few words on page 20 due to a small piece of paper mistakenly glued to the page. Good condition.
