In 1900, the world celebrated the 500th anniversary of the birth of the inventor Johannes Gutenberg [circa 1397 – February 3, 1468]. This invention is still considered the most important invention in the second millennium AD. Since Gutenberg was a native of Mainz, his birthday was found in the postcard world as well, and a number of series were printed to mark the event in Mainz and other cities in Germany. These postcards combined paintings of his (imaginary) portrait, with ancient printing machines, and prints. In some, handwritten writers were drawn alongside printers to describe the development from writing to print, that occurred in his day. These postcards, printed in 1900, marking the occasion, were lithographed by the best German designers and considered of the most beautiful and impressive series of postcard worlds.
