Ha-Tzefirah Newspaper – Issues 1–25 – All Issues from the First Year of Publication. March 4 – July 25, 1862.

A complete set of the first year’s issues of one of the most important and widely read Hebrew newspapers published in the Pale of Settlement, read across the Jewish world from the second half of the 19th century through the early 20th century. In the first issue, editor Chaim Zelig Slonimski presents the aims of the newspaper, calling for reconciliation between religion and the sciences, and warning against both religious and scientific ignorance. He writes in high, eloquent Hebrew, emphasizing reason, openness, and public responsibility:

“And I, whose lifelong aspiration has been to benefit the youth of our people by paving for them a path to wisdom, and to illuminate the way for all who seek it… I shook the dust from my garments and set out to this task, to arrange this periodical which I have named Ha-Tzefirah. And indeed, I know well that such a task is no easy one — to satisfy the masses in our land, whose views differ and whose thoughts are so varied…”.

Ha-Tzefirah is one of the most significant and influential newspapers in the history of 19th-century Jewish Hebrew-language journalism. First published in Warsaw by its founder and original editor, Chaim Zelig Slonimski – a rabbi, scientist, mathematician, and Hebrew author – the newspaper combined reports on Jewish and general world affairs with articles on enlightenment, science, religion, culture, and politics.

From the outset, the paper served as the voice of moderate Jewish Enlightenment, reflecting Slonimski’s religious-scientific worldview and advocating reconciliation between tradition and progress. Uniquely for its time, Ha-Tzefirah also gave significant attention to technological developments, making it a groundbreaking publication in the Hebrew press. Ha-Tzefirah was among the first Hebrew newspapers printed regularly and consistently outside the Land of Israel, and was issued (with short interruptions) over the course of several decades. It played a major role in shaping modern Hebrew journalism, and greatly influenced later publications such as HaMelitz, HaTekufah, and HaPoel HaTzair.

The paper became a platform for key figures in the history of Jewish and national revival, including Peretz Smolenskin, Ahad Ha’am, and Mendele Mokher Seforim.
