“Heil Hitler!” by Eduardo Haro Tecglen – A Rare Spanish-Language Publication on the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and the Persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. [Spain, 1970s]
The booklet opens with a photograph of Adolf Hitler alongside the caption: “One Nation, One Empire, One Leader!” and the description: “The official portrait of Hitler that was required to be displayed in all schools, offices, and public places in Germany.” The first section provides a detailed overview of Adolf Hitler and the early days of the Nazi Party, as well as the power dynamics among his deputies—Göring, Rudolf Hess, Heydrich, Streicher, Goebbels, Schirach—and the roles they played in shaping the party’s direction. A special chapter is dedicated to the 1936 Berlin Olympics and how the Reich’s Culture Office used the international event as a covert propaganda tool to spread Nazi ideology. “What the tourists who attended the Olympic Games did not see, what was carefully hidden from them, was the result of the racial laws dictated by Hitler in Nuremberg on September 15, 1935, which stripped Jews of their rights to freedom of movement… and the decrees that followed forbade Jews from marrying Aryans… they were expelled from all public offices… the Jew was essentially placed outside the law, even outside humanity itself.”
The booklet also provides a detailed account of Kristallnacht, the Anschluss, the formation of the Rome-Berlin Axis with the rise of fascism in Italy, the outbreak of World War II, and the downfall of Nazism. It is accompanied by black-and-white photographs from the Third Reich era.
The author and editor, Eduardo Haro Tecglen (1924–2005), was a Spanish journalist, writer, and essayist known for his sharp and articulate critiques. He wrote for major newspapers such as El País and covered political, social, and cultural issues.
