Issue of the French newspaper Paris-Presse from October 25, 1946 – the execution of the defendants in the Nuremberg trials. Titled: “Voici les photos secrètes de Nuremberg” – “Here are the secret photos of Nuremberg”.
On the issue’s front page the newspaper chose to present the photograph the whole world was waiting to see – the serving of justice to the Nazi war criminals who were responsible for the murder of millions of Jews and other peoples – the bodies of Hans Frank, Keitel, Jodl, Göring (committed suicide in his cell by swallowing a cyanide capsule a few hours before the execution of the sentence) and the other Nazi criminals who were sentenced to death in the Nuremberg trials. The ten defendants sentenced to death were executed by the American executioner John Woods in the gymnasium adjoining the Nuremberg prison at midnight on October 16, 1946, and their bodies were cremated at the Dachau concentration camp. (The rest of the defendants who were sentenced to prison terms served them in Spandau Prison in Berlin. The defendant Rudolf Hess, who claimed to be insane and did not remember anything, was the last of them to remain alive, he committed suicide in his cell by hanging in 1987).
