A fabric flag commemorating Max Nordau (1849-1923), with the inscription: “In memory of the great leader and first proclaimer of the Muscular Judaism!”, likely used in one of the “Maccabi” events.
At the Second Zionist Congress in 1898, Nordau called for the return of the “lost Muscular Judaism” to its former state. Nordau sought to initiate a movement in which the image of the “Jewish warrior” would be restored to the “exiled Jew, ” in an attempt to revive the self-esteem of European Jews in the face of rising anti-Semitism. This idea was directly or indirectly influenced by the eugenic theories popular at the time, which sought ways to improve the human race through physical changes. Nordau believed that the physical rehabilitation of Judaism preceded even its moral and political rehabilitation: “We must create strong Judaism again! Yes! Create again! The days of old testify that such a Judaism once existed… We would choose bodybuilding instead of killing it.” The idea of “Muscular Judaism” led to the establishment of Jewish sports associations worldwide, bearing names representing strength and power: “Maccabi”, “Samson”, “HaKoach”, “Bar Kokhba Berlin”, and more.
