The Great Synagogue of Lyon (Grande synagogue de Lyon) which is on quai Tilsit street in the 2nd district of the city of Lyon. Inaugurated in 1864. With the expansion of the Lyon community towards the middle of the 19th century, the community established a local rabbinate, but the prayers were held in apartments and rented buildings. In 1862 the municipality allocated a plot of land on quai Tilsit for the construction of the synagogue, and the planning of the construction was entrusted to the young Jewish architect
Avraham Hirsch (1823-1913), who was later appointed the official architect of Lyon. The cornerstone-laying ceremony was held on May 20, 1863, and a year later in June 1864 it was inaugurated with the participation of military and civilian officials and representatives of other religions.
In the magnificent synagogue (which exists to this day) is a large chapel divided into three: the main pillar built in height, in the center of which is a blue-painted dome, surrounded by sixteen semi-circular arched windows that let in natural light into the shrine. On the sides of the temple are low passages, separated from the nave by twelve pillars symbolizing the twelve tribes of Israel. At the top of each such page are reliefs and titles in the style of the Koranic order or the combined order. On the sides of the hall, above the low spaces and above the entrance corridor, there is a women’s section with railings of stone pillars. The prayer hall contains 320 wooden stalls as seats for men, and 235 in the women section.
