Issue of the American Collier’s magazine from March 28, 1942 – featuring an anti-Nazi cover cartoon illustrated by Arthur Szyk.
The cover of this issue was drawn and designed by Arthur Szyk – one of the most prominent satirical artists active during (and prior to) World War II. A bold and powerful anti-Nazi satire: at the center is Adolf Hitler in exaggerated knightly attire – portrayed as a kind of “dark knight, ” clad in armor adorned with swastikas, symbolizing absolute evil. To the right: a caricature of Emperor Hirohito, representing the alliance between Nazi Germany and fascist Japan. Hitler’s hands are soaked in blood. A grotesque and biting portrayal of the Axis of Evil – Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan – as perceived by the American public at the time.
Among the articles featured in the issue:John R. Morris: “Retreat to Victory” – a renowned war correspondent anticipates a counteroffensive by the United Nations. J.D. Ratcliff: “Bite of Death” – about the great threat looming over Europe. “Save Your Fighting for the Enemy, Boys”, and more.
