Hitler dead, German Radio tells world - Daily Mail newspaper issue from May 2, 1945 announcing Adolf Hitler's death.
The issue reports that the German radio announced Hitler's death the day before at 10:25 AM: "It is reported from the Führer's headquarters that our Führer Adolf Hitler fell today in his command post in the Reich Chancellery, fighting to his last breath against Bolshevism" and that Admiral Dönitz had been appointed his successor. The newspaper reports this was the first time since Hitler rose to power that the German radio used the phrase "German government", until then all announcements were made "in the name of the Führer". It also reports Germany was divided into two camps, those wanting to continue the war and those preferring to surrender. Notably the paper does not provide details on how Hitler died, and does not mention his suicide which at that time was still unknown or deliberately concealed.
