A rare booklet edited by Dr. Alexander Gottfeld published four months before the outbreak of World War II to assist Jews in emigrating from Germany to Australia, New Zealand and other areas of the British Empire – Kenya, Southern and Northern Rhodesia (today Zambia), and other places. A final attempt to rescue Jews before the liquidation of ghettos and deportation to the death camps. Rare.
In light of the unprecedented rise of antisemitism in Germany on the eve of World War II, the Jewish Cultural Association in Germany published an instructional booklet guiding the German Jewish population regarding favorable places to immigrate in terms of climate, food, living conditions and household management, health, income sources, laws, language, and more. The booklet provides extensive information required by immigrants in all aspects of life and also provides important information about the opportunities Australia and British Empire territories offered immigrants.
Included are letters written by Jews who emigrated to Australia and other regions describing the good living conditions in those areas. In one letter a Jew is quoted saying that while Australia has good living conditions for Jews, the country is struggling to handle the huge influx of immigrants in terms of finding employment and acclimating because the flow of immigration does not stop. In another letter written by a Jewish immigrant in January 1939 it is written that Jewish skilled laborers have greater chances of acclimating in the immigration countries compared to those who are not, and recommends certain settlements within Australia for Jews. There is also a brief historical overview of the Jewish community in New Zealand since the 19th century, and impressions by Jews who emigrated to New Zealand from Germany since the early 1930s. The booklet is accompanied by advertisements for Jewish businesses in Germany.
