Issue of the World View newspaper – “Welt Spiegel”, from January 5, 1939, headline: “A Jewish Tragedy looks Out of the Eyes” – A Jewish newspaper published in Warsaw – a few months before the Nazi German invasion of Poland and the establishment of the Warsaw Ghetto – extensive articles about emigration possibilities from Warsaw to different places around the world, and escape before it’s too late – one of the last issues published by the editorial staff.
The issue’s title page shows a photo reflecting the dire situation of the Jewish people in Warsaw through the eyes of a frightened Jewish child. This photo, chosen by the editor as the issue’s headline, was taken by renowned Eastern European Jewish photographer Roman Vishniac under the title: “Hungarian Boy, Warsaw 1938” (see the photo book A Vanished World by Roman Vishniac, New York 1983, photo no. 46, and attached scan here).
Most pages of the issue deal with emigration and escape options from Warsaw, due to the understanding that the city is becoming less and less safe for Jews. The articles provide extensive explanations of emigration options and everything involved – how to prepare children for emigrating from their homes and make it easier for them to adjust in other countries. Several countries were considered good options for Jews. First and foremost, Eretz Israel. In an extensive article, the author details what needs to be known when emigrating to Eretz Israel and what professions to learn in order to subsist there, such as agriculture – an article appears under the headline: “Eretz Israel – Our Homeland” detailing the wonderful virtues of Eretz Israel and employment opportunities there – mainly in agriculture.
The issue also provides details about several countries with less antisemitism, recommending Jews emigrate there – Australia is one of the preferred countries – an extensive article titled: “Australia, the Continent with All the Good Qualities – “The country can absorb many more millions of new immigrants”, it says, along with important details about the continent such as employment and adjustment options. Another proposed destination for Jewish emigrants is British Guiana, suggesting it as a settlement option for Jews, and more. Another article proposes Argentina as a potential destination – under the headline: “Argentina, the Country of the Future, the Country that Provides All the Good Things in the Big World”, and more.
The central article on the middle pages deals with the diplomatic war between the United States and Germany, reporting on a Nazi spy network operating in the United States, and discussing the likelihood of Nazi Germany defeating the United States if war breaks out soon.
