MENSONGES ET TRAHISON – ‘Lies and Betrayal’ – a Jewish double-sided poster against the anti-Semitic claims that were made in Vichy France and that were spread by the Nazis in the French press and on many stages at the time by the anti-Semitic propagandists. Published by ‘COMITE D’ENTENTE DES ASSOCIATIONS D’ANCIENS COMBATTANTS ET VOLONTAIRES JUIFS DE FRANCE”, Paris, early 1940s.
“Death to the Jews! The shout of hatred of ancient times resounds again, the most barbaric instincts that we thought had disappeared forever are given free rein… thousands lies are spread …”. The words at the beginning of the poster are directed directly against the Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels, who is spreading anti-Semitism into France: ” Goebbels realized that as a result of the difficult times, anti-Semitism was the best weapon in the fight that the Hitler regime was leading against France. He needed a paid agent in France to spread the slander created in Hitler’s pharmacy…”. On the back of the poster, the writer listed one by one the common lies used by Nazi anti-Semitism against the Jews in France. Under the recurring title: “IL EST FAUX” which means: “This is a lie” he enumerates one by one the Nazi lies that were spread in those days in the French press: “It is a lie that there are six times more Jews in France than before the war… It is a lie that the Jewish money Controls the large public companies, out of the 4500 directors of the 560 companies listed in the Chaix directory, only 180 are Jews… It is a lie to say that there is a press fund that covers 2900 newspapers, in the whole of France there are only 225 dailies… It is a lie that the Jews did not risk the First World War…” , and so on.
