First Historical Issue of the “Maccabiah Bulletin” Announcing the First Maccabiah Sports Competition Ever Held in Eretz Israel: “The World Maccabi Sports Congress in 1930 in Antwerp (Belgium) decided to organize the Maccabiah in 1932 in Tel Aviv. The Maccabiah will take place from March 28 to April 6, 1932.”

A stenciled print on special paper with illustrations of various sports disciplines. Rare.

After the festive announcement of the games in Tel Aviv, the issue lists the countries expected to participate in the first Maccabiah held in Eretz Israel: Australia, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Yugoslavia, Latvia, Lithuania, Lebanon, Poland, Romania, Syria, Switzerland, and the United States. It also details the various sports disciplines in which the competitions will take place (“A friendly match will be held between Maccabi Germany and Maccabi Palestine”), the names of competitors from different countries, the entrance fee, and where to purchase tickets.

The first Maccabiah opened with a festive ceremony on March 28, 1932, 20th of Adar II, 1932, at the People’s House in Tel Aviv, with the participation of public figures, headed by Mayor Meir Dizengoff. The following day, Dizengoff, riding his horse, led the athletes’ parade, which included 390 athletes from 27 countries. The competitions continued for five days in most of the main popular disciplines, including athletics, swimming, and soccer. A total of 390 athletes participated in the games. The star of the first Maccabiah was the athlete Sybil Koff from the United States, who won 4 individual gold medals.
