THE JEWS OF RUSSIA: Their History in Maps and Photographs, by Martin Gilbert (official biographer of Winston Churchill). London, 1976 – First edition. A copy dedicated and signed by the author to “Mr. Dinur” (apparently the Nazi concentration camp survivor and renowned writer Yehiel Dinur, known by his pen name K. Tzetnik, who testified at the Eichmann trial).

Martin Gilbert’s important work documenting Russian and Soviet Jewry from the 16th century through the 20th century—the lives of Jews in early modern Russia, the pogroms of the early 20th century, religious institutions, the rise of the Zionist movement, the Holocaust years, and the postwar era. Throughout the book are 26 maps specially composed and illustrated for this volume by British cartographer T. A. Bicknell, tracing Jewish migrations across various Russian cities and the shifting circumstances that prompted these movements. The book also features 96 rare photographs, most of which were published here for the first time.

Sir Martin John Gilbert [1936–2015], a British-Jewish author and historian born in London. During World War II, he spent part of his childhood in Canada as part of a British wartime initiative to protect children during the German Blitz. He is best known as the official biographer of Winston Churchill—a monumental work to which he devoted 20 years, resulting in 24 volumes. A prolific writer, Gilbert authored more than 80 books covering general history, British history, and, in particular, the history of the Jewish people, the Holocaust, the World Wars, and the rise of the State of Israel. In a BBC interview on Holocaust research, Gilbert stated his belief that “the persistent gathering of facts will ultimately ensure there are no Holocaust deniers.” Gilbert’s works are renowned for presenting complex historical events with clarity and objectivity. The “atlas” format—collections of maps organized by subject—is a signature feature of many of his publications.
