Psalms, verses from the Book of Isaiah, Tzidduk Hadin, and a special El Malei Rachamim memorial prayer dedicated to Christian, King of Denmark, described as a “prince torn from his home, his throne, and the lands of the living, ” commemorating his acts of kindness in protecting the Jewish community during the Holocaust: “Remember, O Lord, for good and for blessing, that which… he did with courage and self-sacrifice, to save from death and annihilation the remnants of Your people Israel who escaped to his land and kingdom from the devouring claws of their cruel enemies…” Concludes with ״Adon Olam״.
Christian X, King of Denmark (1912–1947), is regarded as a unique figure in European history during the era of the two World Wars. Under German occupation in World War II, he maintained a continuous and cautious royal presence, which contributed to national cohesion and a sense of Danish sovereignty despite severe constraints. In both historical and Jewish memory, Christian X is seen as a monarch who, through his actions and the symbolic power of his reign, stood in opposition to Nazi anti-Jewish policies, and whose country played a decisive role in the rescue of Danish Jews in 1943. That year, when the Germans began persecuting Jews in Denmark, the King intervened on their behalf. He also helped finance the rescue efforts to transfer Danish Jews to Sweden, where they were safe from Nazi persecution. He is especially remembered for the story that during the war years, he wore the yellow star as a gesture of solidarity with the Jews—a narrative rooted in a 1942 British report stating that the King had threatened to wear the yellow star himself if Danish Jews were forced to do so. Another well-known story, widely circulated in the American press, recounts how the Nazi swastika flag was raised over the Hotel d’Angleterre, then serving as German military headquarters in Copenhagen. During his daily ride, the King noticed the flag and told the guard stationed there that it violated the terms of the armistice and should be removed. When the guard refused, the King reportedly replied that if the flag was not taken down, he would send a Danish soldier to do it. The guard responded, “The soldier will be shot.” To which the King replied, “That soldier will be me.” According to the story, the flag was eventually removed. Because of his stance toward the Jews, King Christian X became a revered figure well beyond the borders of his own country.
