The annual Slam Dunk Contest takes place during the NBA’s All-Star Weekend events. Beginning of the competition in the 1976 ABA All-Star Game in Denver, established as a competitor to the NBA League. The winner of the first competition in 1976, was Julius Irving [known as Dr. Jay] who jumped to the basket from the penalty line and ‘dunked’ the ball. It was the first time in basketball history that the world has watched a Dunk from the penalty line that far 3.60 meters from the basket height 3.05 meter. For years no other player has been able to make a similar jump, only years later in the 1987 Dunk competition – Michael Jordan performed a Dunk from the penalty line that is considered to be the best in world basketball history. According to accurate metrics and cameras, in this jump, Jordan rose higher than Dr. J’s jump a decade earlier. On that dunk, Jordan earned the perfect and maximum score of 50 points from the Jury, thus outpacing his opponent in that Dominic Wilkins competition. Although several dozen competitions have taken place over the years, Jordan’s leap, to date is considered the incredible Dunk in world basketball history.
