“The Buchenwald National Memorial” – a folder with 8 black and white photographs depicting the memorial monuments erected at the camp in the 1950s to commemorate the victims.
On September 14, 1958, the national memorial site in Buchenwald was inaugurated. The memorial site was designed in the style of socialist realism, and emphasized the communist struggle against fascism, the international solidarity against it, and the Soviet victory over fascism. In September 1991, new guidelines for the design of the site were presented by a committee appointed by the Ministry of Science of the Thuringian government. The new concept presented argued that the site should commemorate the Nazi concentration camp and the Soviet detention camp, with the Nazi concentration camp being the main subject, and the commemoration of the two camps being separate.
