Photo album “Jerusalem” in olive wood binding, decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay, front cover inscribed: Jerusalem 1882. An especially early and impressive work, featuring intricate shell inlay framing a stamped olive wood cover.
Chain” album composed of a folded series of lithographic prints from the Holy Land, forming a continuous visual strip measuring 2.55 meters in length! The first four panels present a panoramic view of the city of Jerusalem within the walls, including the Temple Mount. The following panels include views of the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, Mount of Olives, Via Dolorosa, sites sacred to Christianity and Islam, the Jordan River, a view of the city of Hebron, the Galilee, and Jaffa. On the inside back cover is affixed a map accompanied by three views of Jerusalem.
The front cover bears the printed inscription in black: “JERUSALEM 1882”, and the back cover features a finely carved Franciscan cross (Jerusalem Cross).
The entire border of the front cover is adorned with mother-of-pearl inlays from the Land of Israel, placed side by side. Similar examples of Jerusalem souvenir works decorated with shell inlay appear in “Souvenirs from the Holy Land” by Meir Ronen, Old Yishuv Court Museum Publications, 2009, pp. 68–71, including examples from the Wallach Collection and others.
