The Battle of Paris took place during World War II in August 1944, ending with the surrender of the German garrison the occupying on the 25th. The capital of France has been managed by Nazi Germany since the armistice agreement with France in June 1940, when the puppet regime that established its capital in the city of Vichy was established. As the Third Army of the United States came under the command of George Patton, an insurrection of the French underground against the German garrison began in Paris. On August 24 and 25, members of the French Interior Forces (FFI) of the Resistance received backing from the Free French Army and the uprising became urban warfare, with the help of barricades, machine guns, French snipers and tanks, firing at the Nazi forces, until their surrender.
The battle marked the end of Operation Overlord – the liberation of France by the Allies, the restoration of the French Republic, and the exile of members of the Vichy administration to Sigmaringen, Germany, and became one of the signals marking the end of the Second World War.
