A rare artistic photograph depicting a soldier by the sea against the backdrop of a setting sun. The back of the photograph bears a handwritten inscription: “Motl’e Ahrenferz, First Place in the Carmeli Brigade Photography Competition, March 1948.”
The Carmeli Brigade (named after Mount Carmel) was established in 1947 by order of David Ben-Gurion. The brigade’s primary role was securing strategic British logistical bases in the Haifa area upon their departure, particularly the port, access routes, and the oil refineries. The brigade also carried out a retaliatory operation against the village of Balad al-Sheikh (today Nesher) following the Oil Refinery Massacre on December 30, 1947, in which several Jewish workers were killed. By the time of Israel’s independence, the Carmeli Brigade comprised 2,238 soldiers and officers.
