A rare photograph showing men and women from the Exodus refugees after their deportation from Palestine, resting on their bunks in the Zangenwarden Displaced Persons Camp in Germany, 1947. Signed with the photographer’s ink stamp: Wolf Scharf.

The Exodus 1947 was a Jewish refugee ship that set sail from the port of Sète, southern France, on July 11, 1947, carrying 4,554 Holocaust survivors, with the goal of reaching Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine). The British denied them entry, forcibly deported them to France, and after a bitter struggle, they were sent back to displaced persons camps in Germany. The Exodus 1947 – the ship that became a symbol of Zionist determination – shattered history’s barriers, proving to the world that no force could stop the Jewish people from returning home. After a desperate sea voyage, forced deportation, and a fight for their dignity, the refugees did not surrender, even after being sent back to camps on German soil. After about a year in German detention facilities, most Exodus passengers eventually made their way to Israel, some using forged papers (Aliyah D). On September 7, 1949, the last Exodus refugees finally arrived in Israel.

9×14 cm. Divided back for postcard use. Very good condition.
